Cut acrylic. Never cut polycarbonate or PVC.
Acrylic (PMMA) laser-cuts cleanly and leaves a flame-polished edge. Polycarbonate does not — it absorbs the beam, scorches brown, and gives off fumes you should not be breathing. PVC, foam or rigid, is worse: lasering it releases chlorine gas and hydrochloric acid that attack your lungs and the machine’s optics. HDPE is not dangerous, but it melts rather than cuts and leaves a rough, beaded edge. We sell all four materials, so to be explicit: everything on this page is acrylic and is safe to cut on a CO2 laser — mirror acrylic on a CO2 laser only, never a diode. Our polycarbonate sheet is for impact resistance and machining, not for lasers. Always run your own extraction.

If your machine’s maker sells material, it comes in their sizes, their palette and usually one thickness. We cut any size you ask for, in 80+ colors from 1/8″ to 1/4″ on this page — so you can match your bed exactly, or order the odd size a project actually needs. Bed dimensions are each manufacturer’s published usable area and can vary by revision — measure yours before ordering a tight fit.
Which thickness
- 1/8" — The default maker thickness — cuts fastest, least scorching, lowest cost per piece.
- 1/4" — Rigid enough for standing pieces, coasters, and layered assemblies. Needs a slower pass.
Best for engraving
Engraving reads by contrast: the greater the difference between the surface and the engraved mark, the sharper your lettering. That is why black and clear are the workhorses of the maker world.

Edge-glow & fluorescent
Fluorescent acrylic gathers light across the sheet and releases it at the cut edge, so engraved lines and edges appear to glow. The effect is strongest on transparent fluorescents and gets better with a polished edge.

Color for layered pieces
Translucent and transparent colors stack well for multi-layer signs, inlays, and toppers. Ordering every layer cut to the same size keeps registration simple.

Mirror — CO2 lasers only
Mirror acrylic gives a reflective face to signs, toppers, ornaments and layered pieces, and it cuts on a CO2 laser. It is a CO2-only material: a diode's beam passes through the clear face and meets the reflective coating behind it, so it never belongs in a diode machine. Cut a test piece from an offcut before committing a sheet, and keep the film on until the piece is finished.
