1/4" black matte in practice
Opaque stock blocks light entirely, so at 1/4" the decision is structural and visual rather than optical — you are choosing how solid the piece needs to feel and look.
This is the first thickness that stands up on its own: rigid enough for free-standing pieces, risers and structural parts rather than only framed panels.
In a laser: pigment absorbs the beam, so this cuts on a CO2 machine and on a diode, though a diode will need several passes at this thickness.
The matte face hides fingerprints and cuts glare, and it will not polish back to gloss if scratched — keep the masking on until the piece is installed.
1/4" black matte (color 2025M) starts at $12.37 for a 12″ × 12″ piece at this thickness, and weighs about 1.56 lb per square foot, so a 24″ × 48″ piece comes to roughly 12.5 lb — worth knowing before you size a panel someone has to lift or ship.
Why 1/4" black matte acrylic?
The all-purpose workhorse and our most popular thickness. At 1/4″, acrylic is rigid enough to stand on its own in most sizes, which is why it's the default for tabletops, shelving, risers, desk shields, and protective barriers. If you're unsure which thickness to choose, this is usually the right starting point.
About Black Matte acrylic
Black Matte, also called frosted black, is solid black acrylic with a low-sheen, non-reflective face on one side and gloss on the other. Where gloss black mirrors the room, the matte face stays dead-flat and dramatic, so it reads as a premium backdrop for product photography, display risers, sign faces, and award bases. Dust and fingerprints show far less than on gloss black.
