Best Acrylic for Laser Cutting & Glowforge
Acrylic is the go-to material for laser cutting because it cuts cleanly, engraves beautifully, and comes in a huge range of colors. But not all acrylic behaves the same in a laser, and a couple of plastics that look similar are genuinely dangerous to cut. Here's what to use, what to avoid, and how to size it to your machine.
Safety first — never laser these
Never put PVC, vinyl, or Sintra/foam PVC in a laser — they release chlorine gas that's toxic and corrodes your machine. Don't laser polycarbonate (Lexan) either: it discolors, cuts poorly, and can catch fire. When in doubt, confirm the material is cast acrylic before you cut.
Cast acrylic beats extruded for lasers
There are two ways acrylic is made, and it matters here. Cast acrylic is the laser favorite: it cuts to a clean edge and engraves with that signature frosty-white matte markmakers love, and it's more forgiving about melting or gumming at the cut line. Extruded acrylic cuts too, but tends to leave a glossier, gummier kerf, can flame more, and engraves with less contrast. For engraving and crisp cut detail, choose cast. The full comparison is in cast vs. extruded acrylic.
Thickness: start at 1/8″
1/8″ (3 mm)is the workhorse — it cuts in a single pass on most lasers and Glowforge machines and is stiff enough for signage, jewelry, ornaments, and inlays. Step up to 1/4″for sturdier parts, stands, and structural pieces; thicker stock cuts fine but needs more power and slower passes. If you're unsure, our thickness guide maps gauges to uses.
Color and finish for makers
Color is where laser projects come alive. Clear, black, and white are the staples; fluorescent (neon) edges glow where the laser exposes them; frosted and matte finishes give a softer look. Because we cut to size, you can order the exact colors you use most — browse the full palette and filter by family and finish.
Size it to your machine
The Glowforge usable bed is about 12″ × 20″, so sheets in the 12″ × 19–20″ range are the common maker size. The advantage of cut-to-size is that you order sheets that drop straight onto your bed— no wrestling a full 4′×8′ sheet or trimming down to fit. Enter your machine's bed size and order it exactly.
A note on masking
Keep the protective masking on while you cut to reduce surface flashback and smoke residue, then peel after. For heavy engraving, some makers remove masking on the engrave area for crisper detail — test on a scrap of the same sheet first.
FAQ
Is cast or extruded acrylic better for laser cutting?
Cast acrylic is better for laser cutting. It cuts and engraves with a clean, frosty-white matte finish and is less prone to melting or gumming at the kerf. Extruded acrylic tends to leave a glossier, gummier cut edge and can flame more.
Can you laser cut polycarbonate or PVC?
No. Never laser cut PVC, vinyl, or Sintra — they release chlorine gas that is toxic and corrodes your machine. Polycarbonate (Lexan) also should not be lasered: it cuts poorly, discolors, and catches fire. Use cast acrylic instead.
What thickness acrylic is best for laser cutting?
1/8 inch (3 mm) is the workhorse for most laser and Glowforge projects — it cuts in a single pass on most machines. 1/4 inch is common for sturdier parts; thicker stock needs more power and slower passes.
What size acrylic sheets fit a Glowforge?
The Glowforge usable bed is about 12 x 20 inches, so sheets around 12 x 19–20 inches are the common maker size. Cut-to-size acrylic lets you order sheets sized to your exact machine bed instead of trimming full sheets.
