1/4" white matte in practice
Translucent stock diffuses rather than transmits, and thickness controls how much: at 1/4" it softens a light source considerably, hiding lamps and LEDs behind an even glow at the cost of brightness.
This is the first gauge that stands up on its own: rigid enough for free-standing pieces, risers and structural parts rather than only framed panels.
In a laser: CO2 cuts it without trouble. A diode usually will too — pigment is what absorbs the beam — but translucent shades vary, so test an offcut before committing a sheet.
The matte face hides fingerprints and cuts glare, and it will not polish back to gloss if scratched — keep the masking on until the piece is installed.
1/4" white matte (colour 2447M) runs $11.29 per square foot at this gauge and weighs about 1.56 lb per square foot, so a 24″ × 48″ piece comes to roughly 12.5 lb — worth knowing before you size a panel someone has to lift or ship.
Why 1/4" white matte acrylic?
The all-purpose workhorse and our most popular thickness. At 1/4″, acrylic is rigid enough to stand on its own in most sizes, which is why it's the default for tabletops, shelving, risers, desk shields, and protective barriers. If you're unsure which thickness to choose, this is usually the right starting point.
About White Matte acrylic
White Matte 2447 is a translucent white with a soft, non-glare face. Backlit, it spreads LED or fluorescent light into a clean, even wash with no visible hotspots — the reason it's a go-to for illuminated signs, light boxes, and diffuser panels. Unlit, it reads as a calm flat white.
