The S1 is an enclosed diode laser, and the enclosure leads people to assume it behaves like a CO2 machine. On acrylic it does not, and the difference decides which colors are worth ordering. Its 19.6" × 12.4" bed cuts to size exactly.

Running this machine
- ⚠ A diode laser cannot cut clear or transparent acrylic — the beam passes through rather than being absorbed. Order opaque colors only. The 40W head is stronger than the 20W but does not change this.
- Black and the solid opaques cut and engrave well; that is where this machine earns its keep.
- 1/8" opaque is the reliable combination. Expect more passes than a CO2 machine of comparable rated wattage.
Never put these in a laser
PVC, vinyl and Sintra release chlorine gas when lasered — it is toxic to you and corrodes the machine from the inside. Polycarbonate (Lexan) discolors, cuts badly and can catch fire. Acrylic is the material these machines are built around. More on choosing laser stock.
