Opaque stock blocks light entirely, so at 1/2" the decision is structural and visual rather than optical — you are choosing how solid the piece needs to feel and look.
Solid enough to machine, tap and edge-finish like a workpiece rather than a sheet — the range where acrylic is being used as a component, not a covering.
In a laser: pigment absorbs the beam, so this cuts on a CO2 machine and on a diode, but 1/2" is beyond what a desktop diode will get through — treat it as CO2 stock.
1/2" white (color 7328) starts at $14.89 for a 12″ × 12″ piece at this thickness, and weighs about 3.12 lb per square foot, so a 24″ × 48″ piece comes to roughly 25 lb — worth knowing before you size a panel someone has to lift or ship.

About White acrylic
White 7328 is an opaque glossy white, its own shade among our whites. It blocks light completely and reads as a bright, reflective panel from any angle, lit or not. Use it for sign faces, fixtures, and finished panels where a glossy white surface is wanted; for a white that glows from behind, choose one of our translucent whites.
