3/8" red in practice
Opaque stock blocks light entirely, so at 3/8" the decision is structural and visual rather than optical — you are choosing how solid the piece needs to feel and look.
Solid enough to machine, tap and edge-finish like a workpiece rather than a sheet — the range where acrylic is being used as a component, not a covering.
In a laser: pigment absorbs the beam, so this cuts on a CO2 machine and on a diode, but 3/8" is beyond what a desktop diode will get through — treat it as CO2 stock.
3/8" red (color 2157) starts at $21.80 for a 12″ × 12″ piece at this thickness, and weighs about 2.34 lb per square foot, so a 24″ × 48″ piece comes to roughly 18.7 lb — worth knowing before you size a panel someone has to lift or ship.
Why 3/8" red acrylic?
A heavier, more substantial panel. 3/8″ resists flexing across wider spans, making it well suited to sturdier shelving, display bases, and panels that carry some weight or need to feel solid to the touch.
