3/16" red in practice
Opaque stock blocks light entirely, so at 3/16" the decision is structural and visual rather than optical — you are choosing how solid the piece needs to feel and look.
Here the sheet starts to feel stiff in the hand and spans further without visible bow, while staying easy to cut and drill on ordinary tools.
In a laser: pigment absorbs the beam, so this cuts on a CO2 machine and on a diode, though a diode will need several passes at this thickness.
3/16" red (color 2157) starts at $7.40 for a 12″ × 12″ piece at this thickness, and weighs about 1.17 lb per square foot, so a 24″ × 48″ piece comes to roughly 9.4 lb — worth knowing before you size a panel someone has to lift or ship.
Why 3/16" red acrylic?
A middle step between 1/8″ and 1/4″. The extra thickness adds noticeably more rigidity while keeping weight down, so it holds its shape better across medium panels — useful for signage, partitions, and light-duty panels that need a bit more backbone than 1/8″.
