1/4" red in practice
Opaque stock blocks light entirely, so at 1/4" the decision is structural and visual rather than optical — you are choosing how solid the piece needs to feel and look.
This is the first thickness that stands up on its own: rigid enough for free-standing pieces, risers and structural parts rather than only framed panels.
In a laser: pigment absorbs the beam, so this cuts on a CO2 machine and on a diode, though a diode will need several passes at this thickness.
1/4" red (color 2157) starts at $9.64 for a 12″ × 12″ piece at this thickness, and weighs about 1.56 lb per square foot, so a 24″ × 48″ piece comes to roughly 12.5 lb — worth knowing before you size a panel someone has to lift or ship.
Why 1/4" red acrylic?
The all-purpose workhorse and our most popular thickness. At 1/4″, acrylic is rigid enough to stand on its own in most sizes, which is why it's the default for tabletops, shelving, risers, desk shields, and protective barriers. If you're unsure which thickness to choose, this is usually the right starting point.

Red 2157 is an opaque red — bold and fully saturated, it blocks light completely, so what you see by day is exactly what you get. A staple for sign faces, bold retail fixtures, and colored displays; for a red that lights up from behind, look to our translucent reds instead.
