Opaque stock blocks light entirely, so at 1-1/2" the decision is structural and visual rather than optical — you are choosing how solid the piece needs to feel and look.
This is heavy plate. It behaves like a block: it can be machined, polished on the edge and stood on its own, and both the weight and the price scale accordingly, so size it deliberately.
In a laser: pigment absorbs the beam, so this cuts on a CO2 machine and on a diode, but 1-1/2" is beyond what a desktop diode will get through — treat it as CO2 stock.
1-1/2" black (colour 2025) runs $77.47 per square foot at this thickness and weighs about 9.35 lb per square foot, so a 24″ × 48″ piece comes to roughly 74.8 lb — worth knowing before you size a panel someone has to lift or ship.

About Black acrylic
Black 2025 is deep, glossy, fully opaque black — the mirror-finish counterpart to our black matte. It gives a rich, reflective, high-contrast surface for sign faces, display bases, electronics enclosures, and premium backdrops. It blocks light completely; the gloss shows fingerprints, so matte black is the pick when you want a non-reflective face.
