Opaque stock blocks light entirely, so at 0.100" the decision is structural and visual rather than optical — you are choosing how solid the piece needs to feel and look.
This is the lightest thickness that still holds itself flat in a frame, which is why it is the default for signage faces and glazing where something else carries the load.
In a laser: pigment absorbs the beam, so this cuts on a CO2 machine and on a diode, and at this thickness a diode will usually manage it in a pass or two.
