3/8" gray matte in practice
Translucent stock diffuses rather than transmits, and thickness controls how much: at 3/8" it softens a light source considerably, hiding lamps and LEDs behind an even glow at the cost of brightness.
Solid enough to machine, tap and edge-finish like a workpiece rather than a sheet — the range where acrylic is being used as a component, not a covering.
In a laser: CO2 cuts it without trouble. A diode usually will too — pigment is what absorbs the beam — but translucent shades vary, so test an offcut before committing a sheet, and at 3/8" a diode is optimistic regardless.
The matte face hides fingerprints and cuts glare, and it will not polish back to gloss if scratched — keep the masking on until the piece is installed.
3/8" gray matte (colour 7413MD) runs $16.86 per square foot at this gauge and weighs about 2.34 lb per square foot, so a 24″ × 48″ piece comes to roughly 18.7 lb — worth knowing before you size a panel someone has to lift or ship.
Why 3/8" gray matte acrylic?
A heavier, more substantial panel. 3/8″ resists flexing across wider spans, making it well suited to sturdier shelving, display bases, and panels that carry some weight or need to feel solid to the touch.
About Gray Matte acrylic
Gray Matte 7413 is a see-through gray with one matte side — a smoked, hazy look that softens whatever sits behind it. It's popular for privacy panels, AV and tech enclosures, and contemporary signage where you want tint plus a non-reflective surface. Lighter and more translucent than our solid grays.
