Opaque stock blocks light entirely, so at 1/2" the decision is structural and visual rather than optical — you are choosing how solid the piece needs to feel and look.
Solid enough to machine, tap and edge-finish like a workpiece rather than a sheet — the range where acrylic is being used as a component, not a covering.
In a laser: pigment absorbs the beam, so this cuts on a CO2 machine and on a diode, but 1/2" is beyond what a desktop diode will get through — treat it as CO2 stock.
The matte face hides fingerprints and cuts glare, and it will not polish back to gloss if scratched — keep the masking on until the piece is installed.
1/2" brown matte (colour 2418M) runs $21.38 per square foot at this gauge and weighs about 3.12 lb per square foot, so a 24″ × 48″ piece comes to roughly 25 lb — worth knowing before you size a panel someone has to lift or ship.
